Maltese puppies are sweet, adorable little puppies, but like any dog, there are some things to consider. Because they are bred to be so small, they have some health problems. The maltese that I had often had minor trouble with his eyes and ears, but it was mothing that wasn't easily treated by our veterinarian.
Another thing to consider is whether to treat a Maltese like a regular, larger dog, or to house train it like a cat. This is actually a common method with such small dogs. I don't know where you live, but where I live, the winters get very cold, and it doesn't take long for such a small dog with little insulation to freeze. House training not only avoids indoor messes and makes travel easier, but it could be healthier for your dog.
They are very sweet dogs, and I hope you love yours as much as I loved mine. Check out the link below- it tells about the breed from temperament to life expectancy. (On the hom page there is also a link to a breed finder incase you would like to explore other options.)
5 weeks old is way too young for a maltese pup to leave its mom. They need to say with mom until 8 to 12 weeks. Due to the young age its gonna be alot harder to housetrain because he will be going potty so often. His fur shouldnt be mangy either. He should be groomed daily. He should be fed according to the guidlines on the dog food bag
1. You should take (or let it out in your yard) right after they get up, after they eat, after lunch (if they have lunch), after dinner, and right before they go to bed. You should also take them on bigger walks around multiple blocks a couple of times a day.
2. The max is about 8 hours. Since your puppy is a puppy you won't be able to leave her alone as long as you can leave a full grown dog alone. The reason being, they need to go to the bathroom more often than a full grown dog. It is necessary to get your puppy a crate if you are going to leave him/her home alone.
3. 1-3 times a day, depending on when you can.
4. Probably a 5-15 minute walk, just a short walk. You might want to take your puppy on one short walk and one long walk. Or you could do three individual short walks a day.
5. Well you can put her in a crate that she is comfortable in. She can stay in her crate up to 8 hours a day. Just make sure she has enough water in her crate to keep her hydrated while your gone. When you get back, if she hasn't peed in her crate praise her and give her a treat. Then let her outside and if she goes to the bathroom praise her again. This will show "potty" train her, so she knows not to go to the bathroom in tha crate, but outside. She might make a few accidents in the crate though, but over time she'll learn.

they have lots of pictures to look at to see if your dog looks like them or not.
puppies usually look different than the adult dogs.
