Here is the link to the American Shih Tzu Club's website. They give you some very important information about health, grooming, and other vital information about the breed. The link that I am giving you answers your question about bathing.

Most dogs would rather skip bath time, but bathing plays an important role in the health of your dog's coat and skin, helping to keep your dog clean and free of dirt and parasites. And of course, there's the added benefit of making your pooch more pleasant to be around.

these guidelines helped me a lot!

With my shih tzus I get them whats called a "puppy cut". They cut their bodies a little short and leave the heads more fluffy and the tail long. Also, if you think top knots are cute (doggy pony tails) get her used to it now, then after a while she will be used to it and beg for her hair to be pulled up. My shih tzu loves it because it keeps his hair out of his eyes.

As for washing, I wouldnt wash her any more often than once every 2 weeks for an indoor dog, unless she gets in to something. If you bathe her too much (especially a sensitive skinned dog like a shih tzu) it can dry out her skin and hair.

Cute name by the way :)

Smell on an older dog is most commonly because they need their anal sacs emptied. Your groomer will do this for about $10, or the vet tech will do it for usually about $12-$20. If it isn't anal sacs, it is likely her teeth. You can try the greenies or dog toothpaste, or have her vet clean them. Sometimes they lick the anal sac area, trying to get the sacs emptied, and infection begins in their tonsils and stinks to high heaven.
My advice is to get her sacs emptied by a groomer, and ask them to show you how.so you can do it at home if you want in the future. If that doesn't solve the problem, take her to the vet for a check up.
If you are certain the problem is her skin, and not spread from her anal sacs, you can give her a vinegar rinse after her shampoo.. Just add a 1/4 cup of vinegar to a gallon of warm water as the final rinse, and leave it in..just towel dry. ..
